After finishing the book I think that the ending summed it up very well. Jeanette was forced into living the life her mother was giving her. Until she "sinned" with Melanie. That showed her a whole different view. She finally was kicked out of the town and made her own money and seen more than what she grew up with. I think that Jeanette was a strong woman to stick up to the people she did to follow her heart and what she believed in.

So far in this book and the discussion topics I think that the amount of shielding and protection is effecting Jeanette very negatively. She has troubles in school because she was not able to experience a normal childhood. It's to the point that she is getting in trouble or counseled for being too preoccupied with God. Don't get me wrong I don't think there is anything wrong with having faith or religion. I just think that the way Jeanette's mother has incorporated it into her life is causing damage. She has no interpersonal skill with the other students. When it comes to gender she is at the stage that she thinking about things and noticing more things. If her mother had maybe a little, love, passion, or romance in her relationship with Jeanette's father or seen or was explained to more about relationships she would not be so confused or thinking against marriage. Protection is only good to a certain point.

So far it seems like the mother is trying very hard to keep Jeanette from sin and evil and is slowly failing. There comes a point that you can not shield or protect your loved ones from evil in the world. In "Exodus" Jeanette slowly starts to see different points of view other than what her mother has tried to teach her by Elsie. In the "Leviticus" she actually hears the sound of her neighbors fornicating. I am interested to see where this will end up and how much Jeanette's frame of mind will change by the end of the story.
